shy, brave, gentle

Courage beyond fear

Morning light filled the friendly classroom as the teacher announced, “Drawing share!” Milo slid his silly picture beneath a workbook. Purple chicken, roller skates, crown—hide, hide, hide. Chairs scraped across the floor while he pushed the page farther from sight.

The first classmate shared a robot made of toast. Milo kept one hand on his workbook. He thought, “My chicken is much sillier.” Across the room, the teacher listened while sunlight made a bright rectangle on the floor.

The second classmate shared a moon with mittens. Then—whoosh!—wind rushed through the open window. The workbook lifted, and the purple chicken skated across the paper. It bumped the teacher’s shoe. Giggles rippled from desk to desk.

Milo snatched the drawing before it slid away. The teacher bent to pick up the workbook, and more giggles bubbled around the room. Milo tucked the page against his sweater. He thought, “That chicken really does wobble.”

At recess, Milo carried the drawing into the sunny playground. He sat beneath a broad tree and studied every crooked line. The chicken’s crown leaned left; one skate pointed right. “Maybe,” he thought, “wobbling is part of the fun.”

The bell rang. Back in class, the teacher invited one last artist to share. Milo’s paper crackled between his fingers. He whispered, “Maybe they’ll laugh,” then stood and took one step toward the front.

Milo held up the drawing. “I love it because the chicken looks ready for the world—even when the skates wobble.” A few children giggled. Milo took one slow breath and kept the page raised beneath the bright classroom windows.

A dancing sandwich popped from one desk. A moon with mittens appeared from another. Soon a dog piloting a kite joined the gallery. Laughter grew loud and friendly around Milo’s purple chicken, and he pinned it proudly beside the others as the bell rang.
