Milo squeezed Mom’s hand and stepped through the bright school doors. DING! The bell rang, and he stopped before he could say hello.
Mom led Milo down the hallway. He held on tight while classroom doors opened and closed around them.
Chairs scraped. Crayons rattled. When a classmate waved, Milo tucked himself behind Mom’s coat.
Milo sat at a little table and reached for blue. Roll, roll! The crayon slipped under a shelf.
Milo crawled after it. Then he froze. The classmate slid over a red crayon and said, “Here!”
Milo took the red crayon. He drew a round sun and watched the bright circle grow.
The classmate pointed to the picture. “What’s your name?” Milo looked at the crayon, then said, “Milo.”
Milo let go of Mom’s hand. He added yellow rays while the classmate drew beside him.
