Milo pressed his nose against the bright red school doors. His backpack straps were gripped so tight his knuckles turned white.
He took one small step forward, then stopped. Laughter and bouncing balls echoed from somewhere down the hall.
Milo tried the first door. Locked. He tiptoed past a noisy gym and pressed his ear to the next door. Nothing.
Then he saw her. Another little fox in an open doorway, holding up a bright yellow drawing.
Milo stared at the blue bird. Then he looked down at his empty backpack. He thought: I have nothing.
The other fox grinned and held out another crayon — a shiny blue one. 'You can use this,' she said softly.
Milo reached out and touched the drawing with one careful paw. A smile crept across his face.
Milo sat down at the art table and picked up a blue crayon. He began to draw.
