curious, cheerful, helpful

memory, forgetting, learning

Milo sat at his desk, staring at a blank line on his math worksheet. He scrunched his eyebrows and tapped his pencil. 'What was it called again?' he whispered.

Milo climbed into his reading nook and pressed his ear against his head. He heard a faint rumbling, like a subway train deep underground. He pulled on his explorer hat and stepped through his bedroom door.

Instead of the hall, he stood in a huge room filled with shelves upon shelves of notebooks and boxes. Milo tiptoed down an aisle labeled 'THINGS I LEARNED' and pulled out a box marked 'MATH WORDS.'

Inside, he found a flashcard that said 'triangle' and another that said 'apple,' but the page where his missing word should be was blank. A tiny dust bunny scurried across the floor and vanished under a shelf.

Milo crouched and peeked under the shelf. Nothing but shadows and a loose crumb. He called out the missing word and waited. A voice echoed: 'It got filed under S for SNOWMAN!'

Milo ran to the S section and found the word tucked inside a giant book about winter. He pulled it out, but as he held it, the letters started to fade.

'Oh no!' Milo chases it across the floor, but the word hops away and drops into a recycling bin labeled 'SPACE FOR NEW STUFF.'

Milo stared at the bin. Then he saw a fresh, blank notebook sitting on a nearby shelf with his name on it.

He picked it up and flipped to the first page. The ink was still wet, and a new word was slowly appearing: 'volcano.'

Milo's mouth opened in a gasp. He laughed and ran back through the library door, clutching the notebook, ready to learn what comes next.
