Mina and Leo signed up for summer jobs at the community center. The director handed them blue aprons.
Mina pulled the apron strings tight. The rough cotton felt sturdy against her wrists. "Ready?" she asked.
Mina picked up the broom. It kept slipping from her hands. Swish, clack. Swish, clack.
Leo tried to dust the shelves. The feather duster made him sneeze. "Ah-CHOO!" The dustpan jumped.
"Let's work together," Mina said. They moved toward the same corner — and bumped shoulders.
The soapy water spread across the floor. Mina slipped and landed with a soft plop on her bottom.
Leo helped Mina up. Then he saw the soap bubbles on her nose. They both started laughing.
The director appeared in the doorway. She looked at the mess, then handed them both sponges. "Scrub time!"
Mina and Leo scrubbed the floor together. Squish, squash, squish, squash. Bubbles everywhere.
"La la la, scrub-a-dub-dub!" Mina sang. Leo joined in. Their song bounced off the walls.
The floor sparkled. The director clapped once. "Not bad, summer crew."
Mina untied her apron and held it up. It was heavy with soap and water. "Same time tomorrow?" she asked Leo.
