The sun shines warm on the green meadow. Mitik pushes through a patch of clover.
Mitik walks through the clover and stops. A piece of bread sits in the grass. It is bigger than she is!
Mitik pulls at one edge, then the other. Her feet slip in the dirt. She lets out a frustrated squeak.
Mitik marches back to the tree trunk and taps her antennae twice at the nest entrance.
Three ants pop out, then two more. A whole line files toward the bread.
The ants form a line and march across the grass toward the bread.
They all grab the crust and heave. The bread lifts an inch off the ground!
Mitik leads the line, her friends carrying the bread between them.
The warm crust smells sweet. Mitik looks back at her friends and smiles.
They arrive at the nest and drop the bread with a soft thud.
The ants cheer. Mitik leans against the bread, her little legs still.
Mitik's friends settle around her in the shade of the tree trunk. The best treasure was sharing it.
