Mr. Egg waddled through the tall grass. Something gleamed between the wildflowers — a button, rainbow-shiny and bright.
He held the button up to the sun. It shimmered, casting a tiny rainbow across the meadow. He followed it as it rolled, rolling, right into a patch of clover.
Mr. Egg peered over a tuft of grass. A little mouse sat alone by a stone. Her coat hung open — missing exactly this button.
Mr. Egg waddled over. He held out the button. The mouse looked up, eyes wide. He helped her fasten it onto her coat.
Click. The mouse's ears went straight up. She hugged Mr. Egg's smooth shell, and Mr. Egg just stood there, blinking.
The mouse took Mr. Egg's hand and led him toward a cozy cottage in the background. She pointed at a little bench by the door and patted the space beside her.
Mr. Egg sat down. The rainbow button glowed softly on the mouse's coat as they watched the sun go down.
The sun dipped below the hills. The meadow grew quiet. Mr. Egg smiled.
