Kai darts across the kitchen, past the yellow rug, and snatches the toy shield from the hook by the door. The front door flies open. The neighborhood stretches wide and gold in the afternoon light. "Park!" Kai breathes, and then — BANG!
At the park, the swings creak back and forth on their own. Kai stops at the gate, fingers tight around the toy shield. The wind picks up the slide's silver bars. "Not today," Kai whispers, thinking, I'll come back later.
Kai creeps toward the tallest slide. A gust sends brown leaves skittering across the climbing steps. The metal bars clank. Kai backs away, squeezing the shield. The afternoon sun flashes silver across the slide's surface.
One shoe on the first step. Two shoes. Then — a shout from beyond the fence. Kai hops down and crouches behind the wooden bench. Dry leaves tap the slats. A shadow falls close. A hand reaches down.
Kai takes the hand. The grown-up speaks softly, one step at a time. At the top, the gust whooshes through and sends the toy shield soaring into the air. Kai laughs and grabs it, then slides down holding the grown-up's hand tight.
The next day, Kai arrives at the park again. The toy shield is strapped to the belt. At the gate, one small hand finds the grown-up's fingers. The swings creak. Kai steps forward. "We can be brave together," Kai says.
Kai climbs the steps. One. Two. Three. The grown-up's voice follows steady and warm. At the top, Kai looks down the slide and then reaches a hand back without looking. The grown-up's hand meets it.
Kai slides down. The wind catches the edges of the toy shield. At the bottom, Kai stands tall. The grown-up smiles. The swings creak a happy sound. Kai thinks: next time, even taller.
