One evening, Nich tapped her iPad screen in bed. The glowing rectangle rippled like water.
It swallowed her whole. She landed with a soft thud on moss that smelled like warm bread and cinnamon.
Before her, a path of silver leaves wound into a forest where the trees hummed. She followed the humming path.
She found a shimmering unicorn standing knee-deep in a stream of liquid moonlight. Its antlers were tangled in a web of crystalline vines.
She tried tugging from the other side, but the vines tightened. The unicorn stamped a hoof that rang like a bell.
Nich closed her eyes and pressed her palm flat against the cool moss. A tiny flashlight beetle crawled along a root near her shoe.
She held its warm glow toward the vines. The light made the crystalline strands vibrate and dissolve like sugar in rain.
The unicorn exhaled a puff of silver mist that sparkled across the clearing. Nich climbed onto its back, its coat cold and smooth as polished glass.
The creature launched into the sky. They tore through clouds that tasted like popped corn and felt like dandelion fluff.
They shot past galaxies that splashed color across her cheeks. She tapped her heel against the unicorn's flank.
They landed with a giggle-scatter of stardust on her bedroom rug. The iPad blinked once on her nightstand.
Nich rested her chin in her hands, smiling at the faint silver shimmer still floating above the carpet. The tablet blinked again, as if waiting.
