Numera wandered through the tall grass until the trees opened into a sunlit clearing. There, in a neat row, sat seven shimmering symbols — I, V, X, L, C, D, and M — each resting inside its own pale ring of light. She knelt and reached for I. It felt warm in her palm, almost alive.
She pressed I against V, and they clicked together with a soft chime. VI shimmered into existence between her fingers, glowing a little brighter. Numera's eyes widened and she gasped — the metal still warm from the touch.
Excited, Numera lined up I, V, and X on the grass. She pushed them together and they rattled, shifted, then locked with a bright ring. XVI glowed warmer now, and X did a little spin. Numera laughed and reached for L and C.
Numera tried pushing L and C onto the group, but they kept sliding apart. She set them side by side instead, and to her surprise, they chimed together — CLVI. She smiled, but when she reached for D, it rolled away.
Numera moved D closer and rested it against M. The two symbols shivered, then snapped together with a deep resonant hum. MDCLXVI blazed with brilliant golden light, and Numera stepped back, breath catching in the cooling evening air.
The giant symbol shimmered, then broke apart, rearranging itself into new combinations. VII chimed softly. Then IX. Then XL, then XC. Numera leaned forward, watching the symbols dance across the grass.
Numera counted each new number aloud, her voice bright and steady. Seven. Nine. Forty. Eighty. The symbols sparkled and rearranged again, forming new pairs and groups across the grass. She could not stop smiling.
One by one, the symbols settled into new rows, chiming gently like bells. Numera sat back on the grass, surrounded by numbers that glowed softer now — quiet and content in the deepening blue of the Roman Numeral Kingdom.
