On a quiet homeschool day, Olivia painted a big yellow sunflower at the garden table.
Crackle-rustle! A tiny puppy tumbled out of the sunflower stems. Olivia gasped and dropped her brush.
A blue puddle spread across the sunny path. She scooped up the puppy and hurried toward the house.
But the puppy squirmed and slipped right through her fingers, bolting behind the wheelbarrow!
'Come out, little one,' Olivia whispered. Inside, Granny Sue tapped her wooden spoon — clink, clink, clink.
Granny Sue offered a dog biscuit. Olivia offered her red ball. The puppy just watched with big round eyes.
Olivia sat down hard on the grass. Her shoulders dropped. The puppy crept one hesitant step closer.
Crunch-crunch — Daddy's car! Olivia's face fell. He wasn't supposed to be home until tomorrow.
The front door opened — and the puppy bolted! Tail wagging like a windmill, it crashed into Daddy's legs.
Now the garden fills with noise and laughter every afternoon.
Granny Sue read aloud while Daddy tossed the red ball across the sunflower row.
The puppy chased it, brought it back, and dropped it right at Olivia's shoe.
