The library rose around Orin like a forest of books. He reached toward a towering shelf and tugged one glowing volume free. Golden letters sprang from its pages, spelling, “FIND THE SECRET DOOR!” Lanterns flickered overhead as magical windows swung open to reveal a moonlit maze of shelves.
The golden letters bobbed ahead, leading Orin between whispering shelves. He hurried after them while book spines murmured secrets in dusty voices. Behind him, the open windows poured silver moonlight across the floor, turning every aisle into a winding path.
Three carved panels gleamed beneath a shelf. Orin tapped the first, then the second, then the third. Each opened onto the same broom closet. A broom sprang out, dusted his shoes with three brisk swishes, and snapped the door shut with a prim little click. Orin laughed and studied the panels again.
Orin searched more carefully. The lantern nearest the panels brightened whenever he whispered a question. He tested it once. “Where are you hiding?” At once, the shelves rumbled apart. A narrow passage appeared, filled with blue sparks and the distant, steady sound of turning pages.
Orin dropped to his knees and crawled into the passage. Blue sparks popped around his sleeves. Behind him, the glowing book flapped wildly, chasing him through the cramped tunnel. The shelves creaked shut just as he reached a widening patch of light.
He tumbled into a vast room and landed among open books. Creatures from their stories sprang across the pages: a dragon fluttered above a castle, a rabbit sailed a paper boat, and a giant danced between painted trees. Then the floor folded upward, page by page, into a towering paper maze.
Orin stood at the maze’s first turn, holding the glowing book high. Paper walls folded and unfolded with loud flaps. Every path looked different, and every path disappeared. Orin raised his voice above the rustling pages. “Which way?”
The book answered with a beam of gold. It drew a shining path over the paper maze, curling around each fold and pointing toward one dark archway. Orin followed the light. At the end stood a narrow door outlined in gold, its moon-shaped handle waiting.
The secret door opened without a creak. Orin stepped through into a lantern-lit reading room lined with low tables and velvet cushions. Behind him, the library settled with a long, satisfied sigh. He placed the glowing book on a table, and nearby stories opened to fresh adventures.
One book revealed a ship beneath a green sea. Another opened onto a castle wrapped in clouds. Orin touched the table, listening as pages rustled like soft applause. The lanterns glowed steadily now. On the nearest open page, a new golden doorway appeared.
