Paula stood at the edge of the grassy field. She threw the bright red kite high into the air. The wind caught it instantly.
She chased the kite across the green lawn. Sneakers kicked up small puffs of dust. The kite dipped low, brushing against rough bark before soaring upward again.
The kite got tangled in the lowest branches. Paula stood still with the empty spool. She reached up to shake the branch.
Leaves rustled loudly, scattering a flock of startled sparrows. Birds flew away in a chaotic flurry. Their shadows danced briefly on the ground.
Paula climbed onto sturdy roots and pulled the kite free. Fingers scraped against dry wood. She held the damp fabric up to the sun.
A small bird’s nest hid just below where the kite had been stuck. Two tiny chicks peeked out from under feathers. She paused, watching them closely.
Paula walked back to the open grass. She released the kite once more, holding the string loosely. It rose steadily into the air.
The kite danced gracefully above playing children. It spun against the sunlight without catching any branches. Paula smiled, content in the quiet joy of flight.
