Paula kicked the bright orange soccer ball toward the goal. It hit a loose rock and ricocheted wildly into the bushes. The ball vanished with a soft thud, leaving only the echo of its bounce in the quiet afternoon air.
Paula crawled on her hands and knees through the prickly brambles, tearing her favorite striped sock on a jagged twig. She heard a strange, rhythmic thump-thump coming from deep within the green shadows, like a heartbeat made of leather.
Paula pushes aside a heavy fern leaf and gasps as the orange ball is juggling itself mid-air, defying gravity by bouncing higher than she ever could. A tiny, invisible breeze swirls around the ball, making it spin faster every time Paula takes a step closer.
Paula reaches out to grab the spinning sphere, but it zips away, weaving between her legs and tickling her ankles before settling gently at her feet. The sudden stillness is deafening, broken only by the distant sound of her family’s voices calling her name for snacks.
Paula picks up the warm, slightly dusty ball and runs toward the picnic blanket where her friends are waiting, laughing as she throws it high into the sunlit sky.
