shy, brave, curious

finding courage in the dark

Penny pulled her blanket over her head. It made a dark cave. A tiny silver star appeared at the window.

Penny peeked one eye out. The star winked. She pulled back, but peeked again — the star did a little spin.

Penny crawled to the window on her knees. The star floated down and bumped her nose. It was cold as ice.

Penny giggled. The star zipped around the room, turning every shadow soft and friendly.

Penny stepped out of bed. Her bare feet touched the cool floor. The star led her to the window.

The star pushed the latch and the window opened. A whole swarm of silver stars tumbled in.

The stars swirled around the room like fireflies. Penny threw her arms wide.

Penny sat on her bed and watched the stars drift. She pulled the blanket down to her waist.

The nightlight glowed golden. But Penny was looking at the window. She thought — what a wonderful night.

The sky outside was full of gentle wonders. Penny wasn't afraid of the dark anymore.
