Penny spotted something glittering in the sidewalk crack. She bent down and picked up a shiny silver coin.
'A whole dollar!' she whispered, holding it up to the sun. The coin threw a rainbow on the pavement.
Penny marched to the corner store. She counted chocolate bars, gummy worms, and bubblegum behind the glass.
Her finger traced each treat. 'Next!' called the shopkeeper. Penny held the coin tight between her fingers.
But a sniffle stopped her near the community garden. Sam sat on the bench, holding a red, scraped knee.
A tear rolled down his cheek and splatted on his jeans. Penny turned around and marched back.
She placed the coin on the counter and pointed at the dinosaur bandages. The shopkeeper wrapped one up.
Penny ran. She peeled the sticker bandage and stuck it on Sam's knee.
Sam looked down and grinned. 'My knee just got cooler,' he said.
Penny skipped home with empty pockets. The sun was warm, and her steps were light.
