learning about hospitals and helping others

Penny pushed open the heavy glass doors of Oakridge Hospital. A nurse in bright blue scrubs waved from the front desk. A delivery person wheeled a cart of fresh linens past her. Penny's eyes went wide. The lobby hummed with people moving, carrying, helping.

A nurse in blue scrubs waved from the front desk. A delivery person pushed a tall cart of folded white linens past her. Penny tilted her head. Everyone was busy. She wanted to see where they were all going.

Penny wandered down a sunlit hallway. A doctor in a white coat checked papers at a computer. A technician rolled by on a wheeled stool, humming while stacking bandage rolls. Penny followed them slowly.

She peered into rooms. Machines beeped. Warm light spilled from under doors. Penny counted every sound — beep, beep, hum — and tried to guess what each room held.

At the end of the hall, a boy sat on a hospital bed, swinging his legs. His face was crumpled. Penny stopped in the doorway. He sniffled and looked away.

Penny pulled a dandelion from her pocket. She held it up. The boy's nose wrinkled. Then he giggled. Penny sat beside him and told him about the delivery person who almost knocked over a tower of pillows.

After that, Penny walked through the hospital with a new purpose. She watched a surgeon wash her hands at a sink. Water splashed in a steady rhythm. Penny nodded like she understood.

She nodded at a cleaner who mopped the floors with long, careful strokes. The mop made a soft squeak-squeak sound. Penny whispered each job to herself: doctor, nurse, technician, cleaner.

Penny made a list in her head. Doctors, nurses, technicians, cleaners — everyone helped in their own way. She wondered what she could do to help too.

Penny stood at the front desk, her small hands gripping a folded piece of paper. She handed it to the nurse from the first day. The nurse unfolded it carefully.

It was a drawing of every helper she met. Stick-figure Penny stood beside each one — the doctor, the nurse, the technician, the cleaner. The nurse smiled and pinned it to the volunteer board.

Penny walked out into the afternoon light. She had helped. She had shared a story, and a flower, and a drawing. She would come back tomorrow.
