Penny traced the threadbare line with her whisker-tip. It wavered like a faded river across the patchwork. She dropped to her belly, needle clamped tight between her teeth. One stitch later, she gave a quiet squeak of satisfaction. Beyond the window, birdsong drifted toward the garden.

She sat back on her haunches and studied her work. The pale green stitch stood out like a tiny scar against the quilt's colorful patches. Paw-steps scuffed somewhere beyond the wall. She didn't look up — just threaded the next length of green thread through her needle's eye.

The wind hit like a shove. The quilt leapt from its frame and fluttered wildly, every seam groaning. Penny dove, clawing at the corner, yanking it flat against the sewing table. Her whiskers trembled with each rushing gust. The window rattle shook the whole room.

Through the window glass, two sparrowfriends pressed their round faces close, wings puffed tight with alarm. One chirped a sharp question. The other just stared, feathers ruffled, watching the little mouse battle the storm alone. Their tiny claws tapped nervously against the pane.

Penny's paws flew — in, out, loop, pull. Each stitch bit deeper, anchoring the frantic fabric. The wind screamed through the cracks but she never stopped. Through the glass, the sparrowfriends' beaks slowly closed. Their watching softened into something steady and sure.

The wind howled once more, then sighed itself empty. Only the soft tick-tick of the window latch remained. Penny sat back and lifted the quilt high to inspect her work. The new line held firm, smooth and unbroken across the colorful patchwork.

She carried the quilt to the garden and pinned it to the clothesline. The patched cloth caught the warm afternoon light, fluttering gently. The mended seam gleamed like a ribbon of silver in the sun. Nothing hung loose anymore — not a single edge.

Two bright notes rang from the rail above. The sparrowfriends had followed, landing on the wooden bar one after the other. They hopped along it, heads tilting side to side, then broke into a chirping tune — fast and delighted, questioning and proud all at once.
