Behind a stack of yellowed maps, something glinted. Pip pushed aside the paper and found a book. Its clasp was shaped like two dice. He unlatched it.
Three silver dice leaped onto his palm. They rolled themselves into a zigzag on the floor, glowing blue. The blue light danced across his nose. A warm draft whispered from the pages, smelling of rain.
A bridge stretched ahead, guarded by a grumpy dice dragon. Pip offered a shiny brass button. The dragon sniffed it, grunted, and rolled aside.
A riddling knight barred the next path. Domino tiles covered his armor. Pip arranged them in the right order. The knight bowed and pressed a compass into his hand.
A mischievous imp had stolen his lantern. Pip leaned close and tickled the imp's side. The imp squealed and dropped the lantern. Pip caught it, plus a floating silver feather.
Pip stood taller. The compass hummed in his pocket. The world brightened around him, sweet as ripe apples. Each step painted the path a little more vivid.
A colorless castle rose before him. The Shadow Dice Beast waited — all gray shapes and jagged edges. Pip pulled out his items, but they only flickered weakly.
The beast's dice were mismatched — wrong numbers, wrong sides. Pip looked at his treasures. An idea struck him.
He arranged his collected treasures on the floor — the button, the feather, the compass, the lantern — in a wide rainbow circle. The beast watched.
The beast's dice began to glow. They rolled — one, two, three — in perfect harmony. Color rushed through the castle like a wave. The air smelled of fresh paint and grass.
Pip placed the last piece. His lips trembled — then broke into a wide grin. The castle sang with color.
Pip stepped back through the glowing door onto the attic floor. The game book lay closed beside him, its dice clasped like sleeping animals. He traced the warm vibrant cover and heard a faint rumble — the dice were dreaming. Sunlight painted gold stripes on the floorboards.
