Pip sprints through the little green trees as dusk settles over the enchanted woodland. His bushy tail streams behind him, and the wind carries whispered secrets past his pointed ears. The last amber light sinks below the hill. Night falls softly over the small woods, and Pip skids to a halt at the edge of a clearing.
Pip trots toward the old oak where he usually naps, but the trunk is slick with evening dew. Water drips from a low branch. He circles it twice, paws sinking into wet moss, and thinks, Not today. His ears droop, and he pads away toward the hollow log by the stream.
The hollow log is already home to a family of beetles who rattle their tiny legs when Pip gets too close. He backs away on tiptoe and thinks, Oh. Then he tries the bramble patch, but sharp thorns catch at his orange fur as he squeezes through.
A firefly blinks once above the thorns, then darts toward the center of the clearing. Pip follows it on quiet paws, his ears swiveling toward the soft golden light. He trots deeper into the woods, nose pointed forward, tail held high with curiosity.
Pip settles beneath a leafy branch just as the woods go completely dark. Then a hundred fireflies wake all at once, swirling in golden spirals around him. They paint the leaves with moving light, and Pip's tail gives one slow thump against the ground.
The fireflies dance closer, bobbing and weaving like tiny stars falling from the sky. Pip's ears twitch and his whiskers catch the golden glow as they drift lower. He watches them swirl above his head, his body slowly relaxing on the soft moss.
Pip curls into a tight circle beneath the leafy branch, his nose tucked under his tail. The fireflies glow above him, their golden light pulsing softly against the dark leaves. He breathes in the sweet smell of night flowers, and one by one, his eyes close.
His breathing slows to a gentle rhythm. The fireflies continue their slow dance above, pulsing like a lullaby of light. The enchanted woodland holds its breath, and the tiny fox sleeps peacefully beneath his leafy ceiling, surrounded by a hundred gentle golden guardians.
