Pip pushed aside a curtain of silver moss and froze. Beneath his paws, a smooth stone the colour of moonlight hummed — pulsing like a tiny heartbeat against the velvet moss.
He cradled the warm stone close, ears perking straight up, and dashed toward Owlina's oak. The stone's warmth tickled his belly with every eager step.
Pip scrambled up the rough trunk and held the stone aloft. But the glow flickered — once, twice — then shrank to the size of a dandelion fluff.
Owlina blinked one slow amber eye, tapped her beak thoughtfully against a twig, and huffed a soft wind. The feeble light shivered like a dying candle.
Deflated, Pip trotted to the meadow. Bumble was doing frantic loop-de-loops around clover bells. The quiet stone sat heavy and silent in his paw.
He popped up beside the buzzing bee, but Bumble zoomed past on a daredevil dive — upward so fast the light never had a chance to reach him.
A faint shimmer — invisible as spider silk — settled from Bumble's wings onto the stone. Then it vanished. The stone stayed dark and dully grey.
Pip sighed and dragged himself to the stream. Fidget was frantically burrowing a new tunnel beside the mossy stones, his nose twitching a mile a minute.
He gently lifted the stone into Fidget's path. The field mouse darted through a hole in an instant — gone into the earth with only a puff of brown dirt.
Pip sank onto a damp stone by the water's edge. He tucked the dark, useless lump against his chest while the stream babbled its steady, indifferent song.
An idea struck. Pip scurried to the Great Hollow Oak, calling loudly for Owlina, Bumble, and Fidget to come together at once.
One by one, they arrived. Owlina landed on a low branch. Bumble looped in with a cheerful buzz. Fidget popped up from a tunnel, mouthful of clover.
Pip placed the stone in the centre of the circle. The moment their voices rose — Owlina's hoot, Bumble's hum, Fidget's chittered giggle — the stone ROARED to life.
Light erupted like a captured firework — swirling ribbons of gold and blue painting every leaf and stone in the Whispering Woods.
The four friends sat shoulder to shoulder as the glowing stone painted the air. Fidget wove wild stories while Bumble conducted the light with his tiny wings.
Above them, the stone sang a soft crystal melody. The forest hummed back, wrapping the circle in warmth, brightness, and a secret only they now shared.
