curious, shy, brave

Courage in new beginnings

Pip stepped into the classroom. BANG! The door swung shut behind Pip, and the bright room buzzed with voices, crayons, and scraping chairs.

Pip gripped the handle and whispered, “Home?” The classroom sounds rolled around Pip like a rushing river.

Pip walked to a table and placed the small backpack on a chair. Nearby, the wooden block tower tumbled down. CRASH!

Pip watched the blocks settle. Then Pip noticed the sunny playground beyond the windows and followed the class outside.

Outside, Pip stood beside a red ball. It rolled away, bumped the slide, and boinged back between Pip’s shoes.

Pip picked up the ball and called, “Hello!” The children turned toward Pip from their playground game.

Pip rolled the ball toward the game. It slipped under a bench, so Pip crawled after it.

Pip popped out with the ball held high. The children laughed and made room. “Play with us!” they called.

Pip kicked the ball into the game. It flew straight through a hoop on the playground fence.

Everyone cheered. Pip smiled and ran after the ball, racing into the new game with new friends.
