A song skipped across the snowy shore. Ahead, a penguin waddled toward the glittering sea, leaving neat footprints behind. Pip hurried after the melody. “Wait!” Pip called, while distant mountains echoed the tune beneath a pale morning sky.
The song drifted farther away. The penguin waddled onto a floating ice floe, and Pip reached the water’s edge. Scrape! The floe slid from shore. Pip lifted both flippers as cold waves slapped the ice, carrying the singer beyond the snowy bank.
Pip tested one snowy route. A black crack split the path. Pip tried another, but a gust scattered powder across the shore. Then Pip noticed sturdy snow ridges stretching toward the floe. A bright blue feather spun past like a tiny flag, pointing into the wind.
Pip climbed the first ridge. Step. Pause. Step. Each snowy hump held firm beneath careful feet. The blue feather whirled ahead, and the ice floe bobbed beyond it. Pip thought, Follow my footprints. Then Pip called, “Follow my footprints!”
Across the ridges came the singer, shuffling after Pip’s footprints. “Keep coming!” Pip called. The floe bumped a wave—BUMP!—and spun like a pancake. The singer wobbled, squeaked, and flapped hard while the blue feather danced above the turning ice.
Pip crossed the final ridge and reached firm snow. The singer shuffled toward shore, one careful step after another. Behind them, the floe drifted beyond reach, turning slowly in the rolling water. Snow crunched beneath their feet as the two penguins stood safely together.
The singer bowed low. “Thank you,” came the quiet song. Pip answered with a brave little melody, clear as a bell over the waves. For a moment, their voices joined, and the mountains sent the song sailing back.
Together they waddled home beside two fresh trails of footprints. Their song hopped from ridge to ridge. Behind them, the floe became a small white speck on the sea, while the blue feather settled quietly in the snow.
