Pip stood at the edge of his nest and looked down. The ground was very far away. His wings trembled.
Mother tapped a leaf with her beak.
Fly, she said.
Pip hopped back into the straw. The nest felt safe. He closed his eyes.
Mother sat very still for three days. She did not call for worms. She did not stretch. The forest was quiet.
Pip looked at Mother. He looked at the sky. He hopped to the edge. The wind touched his feathers.
He jumped.
He flew straight to Mother. She lifted her head and smiled.
