Pipkin swept the sunny meadow, gathering a silver idea-feather, a brave fox, and bright painted scenes. Beside a blank page, the treasures made a wobbly tower. “One beginning, one ending, all finished today!” Pipkin announced. The pages rustled like tiny flags in the golden breeze.
Pipkin sketched the brave fox racing through a whispering forest. Next came a moonlit hill and a door shaped like a star. “Stay in your places,” Pipkin whispered. But the fresh ideas bounced across the paper, faster than a pencil could follow.
Pipkin blinked at the picture. The fox wore the hill like a lopsided hat, while the star-door sneezed glitter—“Achoo!” Silver sparkles dotted the page. Pipkin reached for an eraser, but the drawings hopped away from every careful mark.
Then—WHOOSH! A gust scattered the book across the meadow. Pipkin snatched one runaway page before it sailed over the daisies. Ink footprints marched toward the forest. Under one arm, Pipkin carried the fox drawing; overhead, the silver idea-feather whistled, “The ending! The ending!”
Pipkin followed the ink footprints beneath whispering branches. Pages snagged on ferns, fluttered from trunks, and slid along the moss. “Beginning first,” Pipkin thought. “Then middle. Then ending.” The silver feather circled ahead, flashing whenever the path forked.
At last, Pipkin reached the moonlit hill. The unfinished pages whirled upward, building a towering paper storm. Between two fluttering scenes, the brave fox vanished. Pipkin climbed after the pages, calling, “Hold on!” and grabbed the fox just before the storm swept them both away.
Pipkin spread the pages across the hilltop. Beginning beside middle. Middle beside ending. One page tried to fly, but Pipkin pinned it with a smooth stone. Slowly, the fox found the forest, the hill found the moon, and the star-door found its place.
The storm stopped. One last page floated down with a soft, papery plop. Pipkin pressed the finished picture book flat and checked every picture twice. No fox wore a hill. No door sneezed glitter. The ending waited quietly at the very end.
