Pippa slid a broccoli floret under the tablecloth. It vanished into the dark shadows beneath the wood. She stirred her peas until they formed a green puddle, then pushed the plate away.
Pippa lifted the lid of the garden pot and gasped. A tiny carrot with leafy green hair peered up, waving a frond like a hello. She pulled another lid off the compost bin to find a cucumber wearing a daisy hat.
Pippa nibbled a snap pea and heard a tiny crunch like miniature footsteps. A pea pod popped open, sending a tiny pea bouncing onto her tongue. Another followed, each tasting like warm sunshine. She ran to the kitchen to sniff the jar of dried herbs.
Pippa stood at the dinner table with a plate piled high with vegetables. Red peppers, orange carrots, and purple cauliflower sat beside green beans. Her mom set down a bowl of plain rice. Pippa picked up a carrot stick and took a big bite.
Pippa woke early and ran to the garden, where the vegetables were growing taller and brighter than ever. She picked a cherry tomato and ate it right there, juice running down her chin. At breakfast, she asked for vegetables with her toast.
Her mom smiled without saying a word, watching Pippa eat her toast with a side of fresh greens. The kitchen felt warmer, filled with the scent of rain and soil. Pippa realized the garden had been waiting for her all along.
Pippa finished her breakfast and ran back outside. The tiny carrot waved again from its pot, now joined by friends. She patted the soil gently, promising to return tomorrow with more water and sun.
The house smelled like dinner cooking, but this time, Pippa helped chop the onions. She laughed as tears mixed with the joy of making something delicious together. The garden and the kitchen were finally one place.
