Pippa weaves through the dense forest. Her ginger paws slip on mossy roots, and pine needles crunch beneath her weight. The trees grow thicker, stranger with every step. A distant owl hoots — but no scent of home drifts on the wind. She pauses, ears flicking, and realizes the path behind her has vanished.
A shape slides between two pale birch trunks — a tall, sly kittynapper with a folded woven net tucked under his arm. His wide, toothy grin catches the dappled light. He spots her. Pippa freezes, one paw still raised. "Found you," he purrs, stepping forward. The net whispers against the leaves.
Pippa bolts. Her paws drum against the forest floor as she leaps over exposed roots and ducks under low-hanging branches. Behind her, quick footsteps and the rustle of a net close in, growing louder with every second. She skids to a stop beside a hollow log. The kittynapper's shadow falls across her paws.
She skids to a stop beside a hollow log. The kittynapper's shadow falls across her paws. She presses against the rough bark. This is it, she thinks. Then — a rust-colored blur erupts from a nearby bush, snarling and swiping.
The badger charges the kittynapper, bristling and loud. He yelps, drops the net, and scrambles away into the undergrowth. Pippa's ears flatten and her tail puffs to twice its size as she watches the badger stand tall over the abandoned net. She breathes slowly. The badger nods once, then vanishes into the trees.
Pippa pads forward and nudges the net with one careful paw. She turns toward a new sound — the gentle rush of a creek she remembers from home. Smoke curls up between familiar oaks, and the sweet smell of her kitchen drifts through the trees. She follows the scent, her steps growing lighter.
She follows the scent through the familiar woods, her paws light and sure now. The creek babbles beside the stone path, and she knows every turn. A cottage window glows amber in the distance. She trots faster, tail held high, until the stone path leads straight to her door.
Pippa steps onto the familiar flagstones. The sweet smell of her kitchen wraps around her. She pushes open the cottage door with her nose and curls onto her favorite cushion by the crackling fire. A soft purr rumbles — she is home.
