Behind the heavy tapestry in the castle wall, Pippin found a hairline crack leaking golden light. He pressed his nose to the seam and watched a tiny fox run past — boots far too big for its paws. No one else had ever seen this seam before

He pressed his nose closer. Through the crack, a miniature fox — no bigger than his paw — sprinted past wearing wooden boots that clattered with every step. They were impossibly, endearingly huge on those tiny legs.

Pippin squeezed through the crack and landed on a floor of warm, smooth glass. Around him stood golden exhibits: a fox knight with a shining sword, a fox explorer with a rolled map, and a fox healer bandaging a wounded bird.

Pippin stepped toward the knight. His shadow stretched across the glass floor on its own — long and thin — and reached toward the golden figure like a hand.

Pippin reached out. The golden knight tilted its head and opened one glowing eye. Words in gold poured from its mouth — "You were brave once, too. You just forgot."

The golden words dripped onto the glass floor and began pooling around Pippin's paws. He looked down at the shimmering liquid and knew it was something he had lost.

At the far end of the hall, a new doorway of pure white light appeared. Pippin backed away, ears flattening. Then he turned and stepped forward again.

He looked back at the golden knight, still watching him. His claws dug into the glass floor. Then he ran.

Pippin leaped through the white light. Something warm wrapped around him like a blanket. For one breathless moment, he saw himself at every age — small, then bigger, then big — all at once.

He chose to be big. The white light folded around him, warm and sure, and then it was simply over.

Pippin stood in the castle courtyard, wearing a silver cloak, his tail held high. Behind him, the tapestry hung peacefully on the wall. The hairline crack was gone.

He lifted his chin and walked toward the courtyard door. Golden dust swirled at his paws with every step. The castle felt different now — as if it had been waiting for him to remember.
