At the base of the old oak tree, Pip saw the most perfect apple he had ever seen. Right under its shiny red skin.
Another small hedgehog named Bramble reached for it too. Both pulled back hard, their quills bristling. The apple rolled away into the tall grass. "I saw it first!" squeaked Pip.
Pip walked alone through the wildflower meadow. He kicked a small stone across the path.
He saw Bramble across the clearing and turned his back. He walked faster.
CRACKLE. A loud sound came from the bramble patch by the stream. Pip froze. Then a tiny voice squeaked. It was Bramble!
Pip took a shaky breath and stepped into the brambles. A twig boinged off his nose. He sneezed. Then he reached his paws through the thorns and gently pulled.
Bramble tumbled free. He looked at Pip with big, grateful eyes. His leafy vest was tangled but he was safe.
Back on the moss, Pip picked up the shiny red apple. He handed it to Bramble. Bramble took a big crunch, then broke off the largest piece and offered it to Pip.
They sat together under the oak tree, eating and watching the wildflowers sway in the breeze.
The apple was sweet. And the best part was sharing it.
