Recess sounded like flying feet and shouted counting games. Pip sat under the big oak tree with his red pencil case on his lap.
He unbuttoned the snap and pulled the zipper open. Inside were four fidget toys and a glitter spinner. He gave it one rub. Swish!
Silver sparkles fell like tiny snow across the grass. Pip grinned. 'Mine,' he whispered to himself.
The bell rang — time to go back inside. Pip slipped the spinner into his pocket and marched to the classroom door.
At his desk, Pip took the spinner out again. He rubbed it once. Whoosh. The silver glitter rose and hung in the air.
The girl next to him leaned over. 'Can I try?'
Pip looked at the spinner, then at her hopeful face. His fingers tightened around it. 'I — um — I don't know how yet.'
But then he remembered the grass. The silver snow. His shoulders relaxed.
He rubbed the spinner. Whoosh! Silver sparkles erupted and filled the space between them. The girl's eyes went wide.
Soon the whole class was watching. Even the teacher stopped writing on the board and turned around.
One by one, the children came closer. 'So pretty,' someone whispered. Pip spun it again. Swish. Swish.
Pip kept spinning. The silver light danced all around him, and for the first time all day, he felt like he belonged.
