Pip throws off his blanket and hops onto the rug. "Today has to be the most magical day ever," he says. He opens his toy box. "What makes a day special?"
Pip holds up his bear. "What makes a day special?" he asks. The bear sits still. Pip asks his picture book. The pages stay flat.
At kindergarten, Pip tugs on Maya's sleeve. "What makes a day special?" he asks. Maya points to her block tower.
Pip asks Leo. "What makes a day special?" he asks. Leo holds up a drawing of a green dinosaur.
Pip tries to build a tower but his blocks keep falling. He tries to draw but his lines are wobbly. Frustrated, he drops his crayon and it rolls across the floor.
The crayon stops against Maya's tower — and somehow, the tower stands perfectly balanced. Leo claps. Maya grins. Pip's mouth opens wide.
Pip picks up his wobbly drawing and holds it up. "This is me," he says. Maya laughs and draws next to him. Leo shows Pip his dinosaur.
Pip smiles, his crayon moving across the paper in big, wobbly strokes. He thinks: maybe a special day is just a day you try.
