Pip hopped over the jagged rock. A stagnant pool blocked the path. He nudged a floating pinecone. It smelled of stale mud. The silence pressed against his long ears.
He pushed a large boulder aside. Roots tangled beneath it held back the stream. Pip pulled at a stubborn branch. His paws stung from the rough bark. The water whispered nothing but stagnation.
A small marmot watched from a ledge. It chittered softly as Pip tried to untangle a knotted vine without success. Pip’s whiskers twitched in frustration. The marmot dropped a smooth stone into the gap.
Pip gathered loose pebbles and wedged them into the cracks. He used leverage to pop the final cork of debris. With a sudden whoosh, clear water rushed past. Cold droplets splashed onto his wet fur.
The stream flowed freely downstream. Tiny seeds landed gently on dry patches of earth nearby. Pip sat by the rushing water. Bubbles danced over stones he had polished clean. The mountain breathed easier.
Pip rested his chin on his paws. He watched the bubbles dance. The valley echoed with joyful sound. He felt content. The mountain was alive again.
