The plane's wheels kissed the runway, and Prathin was already gone. He sprinted past swaying palms straight into the emerald tangle. Vines heavy with purple berries brushed his arms as he ran, and a golden-brown monkey dropped from above, snatching his explorer hat from his head. "Hey!" Prathin called, but the monkey was already laughing.
Prathin chased after the chattering monkey, bursting through a curtain of hanging moss. The monkey perched on a low branch, wearing the explorer hat sideways and grinning. "Give it back!" Prathin said, reaching out. The monkey tilted its head, the hat slipping lower over one eye, refusing to let go.
At the edge of a wide clearing, thick green vines formed an impenetrable wall. A low humming vibrated through the leaves, making the purple berries tremble against Prathin's fingertips. He tugged and pulled, but the woven vines only tightened, knotting together like thick rope. He thought: how do you get through a wall that won't let go?
A branch splashed against Prathin's shoulder — the monkey had hurled it at the vine wall! Water gushed through the gap, sparkling and cold. A small silver fish leaped out and landed with a soft slap on a flat rock. The monkey flicked its tail, pointing deeper into the jungle, then vanished through a narrow gap between two ancient trunks.
Prathin squeezed through the narrow gap between the trunks, branches scraping his shoulders. When he emerged, he gasped. The monkey hung upside-down from the cavern ceiling, chattering excitedly above him. Behind it, water cascaded down in a shimmering curtain of neon pink and electric blue light.
Prathin stepped closer to the glowing pool at the base of the waterfall. He reached his hand into the swirling colours, and ribbons of neon pink and electric blue spiraled around his fingers like liquid rainbows. The monkey scrambled down from the ceiling and landed on his shoulder, grooming a purple berry from his hair.
They sat together beside the glowing pool in the quiet cavern. The monkey rested against Prathin's arm, the purple berry tucked into its fur. Neon pink and electric blue light painted their faces in swirling patterns, and the waterfall hummed a soft steady song. Prathin thought this was the most wonderful place in the whole world.
The jungle hummed around them, warm and alive. Prathin smiled as the neon lights danced across the cavern walls, the monkey purring softly against his side. His explorer hat sat forgotten on a rock nearby, but he didn't need it here. He had found something far better — a secret waterfall, and a new friend.
