Pusheen pressed her nose to the cool kitchen window, watching Mrs. Higgins' oven steam curl into the street. Vanilla sweetness drifted through the glass. "I want to make something that smells like that," she whispered to the quiet room, then marched toward the pantry where a flour-dusted recipe book waited atop a jar of sugar.
She flipped the recipe book open to 'Cupcakes for Cats.' The pages fluttered in a draft from the window. 'Measure, crack, mix,' she chanted, tipping a cup into a bowl—but white powder went everywhere. She sighed, carefully rescuing scattered flour with a second cup, and moved on.
Pusheen cracked two eggs, but shells tumbled in. She fished out a jagged piece with her claws, leaving another behind. Her whiskers drooped as she scraped the batter into a tin—the sour smell of cracked egg sharp in the air. 'Measure, crack, mix,' she repeated more slowly.
She placed the tin in the oven. The timer dinged. Pusheen pulled out the muffin tin—six golden cupcakes puffed proudly, though one toppled over, frosting sliding onto the rack. Her ears flattened, then perked up as buttery warmth hit her nose.
She broke off a tiny piece and tasted it. Perfect. Grinning, she decided to frost the remaining cupcakes with homemade icing, spreading it thick and pink with her little spatula.
Pusheen arranged the frosted cupcakes on the cooling rack. Sweet scent wrapped the kitchen like a soft blanket. She took another bite of the fallen one, crumbs dusting her whiskers, and hummed a happy tune to the empty room.
The new normal settled over the kitchen. This was her space now, and baking was a skill she had learned. The recipe book lay closed beside the empty jar, ready for next time.
Outside, Mrs. Higgins' oven cooled. Inside, the plump gray cat purred, dreaming of her next batch—something chocolate, maybe, or lemon. The recipe book waited patiently, its pages full of possibilities yet to come.
