finding beauty in color

The little bunny hops outside and stops. The sky is green. The mushrooms are green. Even the rainbow is just one long green curve.

She tugs at her whiskers. Something is very wrong with the forest.

Rabbit meets Bear and finds a red apple in the grass. 'I keep colors in my heart,' Bear rumbles, pressing the apple into her paws and going green again.

Rabbit trips over a root and the apple bounces into a bush.

Rabbit finds Frog in a reed and discovers a golden feather tucked under a lily pad. 'That's mine,' Frog croaks, plucking it back and turning a dull brown-green. The feather flutters down and lands in Rabbit's paw.

Rabbit holds both the apple and the feather up high. Nothing happens. Her ears droop. The items look ordinary against the endless green. A breeze carries the sound of birdsong from somewhere far away.

Rabbit runs to Bear and shoves the apple toward him. Color bursts from Bear's chest and splashes across the trees like paint. Rabbit gasps and looks at the feather in her hand.

Rabbit hops to Frog and holds out the golden feather. Blue light spills from Frog's fur and paints the reeds in shimmering stripes. The feather glows bright gold in Rabbit's paw.

Rabbit stands in the center of the forest with the feather glowing. She closes her eyes and breathes — golden light pours from her own chest and spreads across the ground like honey.

When she opens her eyes, every tree, every stone, every blade of grass is dressed in brilliant color.

Rabbit hops home past Bear and Frog, both wearing their true colors. She touches her chest — something warm and bright pulses there. The rainbow above arcs in every color at once.

Rabbit smiles.
