Learning to ask questions

Afternoon clattered through the family café. Cups chimed, spoons tapped, and the espresso machine hissed. Ramiro reached toward a dark glass bottle on a tray, its bright red label shining beneath the lights. He thought it might be an alcohol bottle.

“Wait!” A grown-up’s hand quickly moved the bottle away. Cups clinked again, but Ramiro stopped with his fingers hovering above the tray. He watched the serious faces nearby and wondered why one little reach had changed the whole café.

Ramiro pointed at the bottle. “Is that alcohol?” The adult woman exchanged a startled glance with someone beyond the frame, then answered gently, “No—this is Coca-Cola.” The red label flashed, bright as a tiny café sign.

Two drinks waited nearby. The Coca-Cola fizzed inside its familiar bottle; the other drink rested in a clear glass with ice. “How can I tell?” Ramiro asked. Ice rattled. Bubbles fizzed. He wondered what could happen if someone tasted the wrong drink.

Ramiro reached toward the unfamiliar glass, then stopped. “May I taste this?” he asked. The trusted adult slid it safely away and said, “Drinks can look alike but be different.” A lemon slice skidded across the counter like a tiny yellow wheel.

“I’ll check first,” Ramiro said. The trusted adult nodded and placed the labeled Coca-Cola bottle in front of him. Ramiro read the red label carefully, while the unfamiliar glass remained safely on the far side of the counter.

Only after the trusted adult confirmed it did Ramiro take a careful sip. He set the bottle beside the napkins and looked from the label to the glass across the counter. “What else should I check?” he asked, waiting before reaching for anything new.

The trusted adult began explaining, pointing first to the label and then to the different glass. Ramiro listened closely. The espresso machine sighed, a spoon chimed, and the bottle waited beside the napkins while he waited for the answer.
