In a sun-dappled meadow, Robo unrolled a crinkly parchment scroll. His claw-thumb snagged the sticker that said 'Near the Toadstool' instead of the first step. He scuffed his metal foot, already reaching for the next clue.
He dug at the gray mushroom base. His metal shovel clanged against hard-packed earth. Only dust puffed out. Robo stared at the scroll, his antenna drooping slightly. 'Wrong sticker again,' he thought.
Robo trotted to the babbling brook and leaped onto three smooth stones. Water splashed cold droplets over his hot joints. 'Hmm,' he thought, shaking rain from his plating. 'Not there either.'
He scrambled to the towering oak, scratching at the rough bark. Loud scraping echoed. A sleeping beetle curled in the moss. Robo walked back to the center of the path and stared at his scroll. He had circled right back to the gray mushroom.
An iridescent butterfly drifted down and settled on the crumpled scroll. 'You are counting steps, not reading them!' she chirped, tapping a tiny leg against the first sticker. Robo zoomed his lenses.
Robo peeled the 'Brook' and 'Oak' stickers from the page and slid them into the correct slots. His cheerful beep echoed across the meadow. The tangled map became a clear path. He followed it without hesitation.
Robo hopped precisely across the three smooth stones, sending a rainbow of mist into the air. 'Twelve red poppies,' he clicked, counting each one. He reached the towering oak and slid his spade beneath the lowest root.
His metal clang rang loud against something hollow. Robo dug with both claws. A heap of shiny golden coins tumbled into the soft earth. 'Found it,' he thought. His headlights flashed a triumphant yellow beam.
Robo balanced a warm coin on his nose and beamed. Around him, the meadow glowed — golden light spilling over scattered treasure, poppies nodding, and the brook singing softly. He had read the map. It had been right all along.
The meadow settled into evening. Robo's scroll lay folded neatly beside the treasure. He sat among the coins, his engine humming a quiet, contented song. The path had been clear — he just needed to look.
