Rozë sets her blue doll on the windowsill. The garden looks quiet and still outside.
Suddenly, the doll’s head tilts toward the garden. Rozë blinks hard and rubs her eyes with a dusty fist.
She leans closer to see if it happens again. The doll takes one tiny step forward on the wood.
Then it freezes like a statue. Rozë gasps and drops her crayon; it rolls across the floor with a loud clatter.
She holds her breath and watches the window frame. Then she grabs the doll and marches to the kitchen table.
The doll waves its arm at a sleeping cat, which flicks its tail in surprise. Rozë giggles and whispers plans.
They climb onto the sofa cushions to build a castle against the big glass window. A sunbeam hits the doll’s face.
It glows bright yellow like gold. Rozë cheers and throws her hands up in delight.
Rozë sits back on the rug, hugging the still doll close to her chest. The afternoon light stretches long.
She smiles and rests her chin on the doll's soft hair. The day feels perfect and complete.
