Ruby hopped through Bramble Hollow after a rainstorm, her nose twitching at the damp earth scent. The meadow gleamed with puddles and wet green. Then she heard a tiny distressed squeak from a water-swollen hollow log near the creek bank.
She pressed her ear to the soggy bark and called out, but the squeak only grew more frantic from inside. Ruby's ears perked up sharply. 'Hang on!' she called through the damp wood.
Ruby wedged her paws into the log's entrance and pulled with all her might. The wood held fast. She dragged flat stones and broad leaves to build a ramp, but the moment she tried to climb, it collapsed into the mud with a wet squelch.
She sat back on her haunches, ears drooping. Then her eyes caught a thick root network anchoring the log from below. Ruby dug furiously, her paws carving through cool damp soil until the log groaned.
The log groaned and tilted free. With a soft crack, it tipped onto its side, and Pip tumbled out into the grass, shaking raindrops from his whiskers. Ruby's paws were caked in mud and her fur was damp, but she hopped up and down in triumph.
Ruby led Pip back toward the old oak tree, their shadows stretching long across the meadow. She patted his shoulder and they hopped together into the warm burrow, where a single candle flickered against the stone walls.
Inside the burrow, the stone walls glowed amber in the candlelight. Pip sat curled on a bed of dry leaves, safe and warm. Ruby sat beside him, her muddy paws tucked beneath her, watching the flame dance.
Ruby pressed her ear to the soggy bark again, listening. The frantic squeaking had stopped. She called out softly, 'Are you alright in there?' But only silence answered from the dark hollow.
She pulled harder, but the old wood wouldn't budge. Ruby stepped back and examined the log from all angles. A thick tangle of roots held it firmly in the muddy bank below.
Ruby dug with furious determination, sending clumps of earth flying. Her paws worked faster and faster until the log shuddered. Then with a loud crack it tipped free and rolled onto its side.
Pip tumbled out into the soft grass, coughing up water. 'You came back!' he squeaked, shaking raindrops from his whiskers. Ruby hopped in place, her tail twitching with delight.
Inside the warm burrow, Pip curled up on the dry leaf bed, his breathing slow and steady. Ruby blew out the candle, and the stone walls dimmed to a soft moonlight glow. Safe at last.
