Courage through caring support

Sam raced across the sunny park toward the slide. His foot caught the sandbox edge—bump! He tumbled onto the soft ground.

Sam held his arm still while the swings creaked nearby. “Mom! Dad!” he called.

Mom and Dad hurried over and knelt beside him. They called 911, and a siren wailed closer. “I’m scared,” Sam whispered.

Paramedics gently helped Sam onto a stretcher. The ambulance doors went whoosh, and red lights blinked as his parents held his hands.

At the welcoming hospital, a doctor checked Sam’s arm and wrapped it in bright tape. “Will it be okay?” Sam asked.

A nurse gave Sam a teddy bear named Bobo. Sam hugged Bobo with his good arm, and a fuzzy ear tickled his cheek.

The nurse showed Sam how to rest his cast on a pillow. The pillow slid—poof!—and Bobo popped into the air. Sam laughed.

Sam left the hospital with his parents, his cast, and Bobo tucked under his arm. “I can be brave with Bobo,” he said.

At home, Sam placed Bobo beside his pillow and rested his cast on a cushion. The night-light glowed softly.

Bobo’s button eyes shone beside the pillow. Sam closed his eyes and fell asleep, ready to heal.
