The blanket pulled tight around Sami like it had grown heavier overnight. He stared at his toast on the plate. No appetite at all.
Sami sat at the kitchen table and scribbled jagged yellow lines across the first page. They looked wrong. He flipped the page and tried blue, then purple, then black.
He pushed away from the table and marched outside. The heavy feeling followed him all the way to the end of the walk.
Back inside, Sami opened to a fresh page. He drew a big round gray shape, then a tiny raindrop beneath it. The gray seemed to shimmer.
Sami climbed onto his mom's lap and turned the notebook around. She looked at the drawing for a long moment, then pulled him close. 'That lump is your sadness,' she said. 'You drew it perfectly.'
Sami's thumbs pressed into the edge of the page. The weight on his shoulders felt just a little lighter.
Sami ran back to the table and grabbed an orange crayon. He colored a small sun in the corner next to the gray blob.
The sun glowed warm on the paper. Sami slid the notebook toward his mom like it was something brand new.
His mom traced the orange sun with her fingertip and smiled. 'It looks like tomorrow,' she said.
Sami picked up his yellow crayon again. There was still so much of the page left to fill.
