Sami pulled the covers over his head. Tick. Tick. Tick. He stayed under the blanket until his mom called his name.
Sami stood at the classroom door and peeked inside. The walls were painted bright red, sunny yellow, and sky blue. He stepped backward and hid behind his mom's leg.
Sami sat at a small table and watched other children draw. A boy colored a big green frog. A girl painted a purple sun. His hands stayed folded in his lap.
A girl with pigtails slid a box of crayons across the table. "You can use these," she said. Sami picked up a blue crayon. It smelled like wax and something sweet.
His fingers slowly uncurled. The girl drew a wiggly green worm that made Sami giggle.
Sami drew a tall tower with a rainbow on top.
The girl drew a sun next to it. Their pictures almost touched.
Sami stopped watching the door.
The girl added a little grass under her sun. Sami added a door to his tower.
Sami looked at his tower, then at the girl, then back at his tower. He kept drawing.
