Sam dug a tiny hole in the warm dirt. He dropped a seed inside and covered it up.
He patted the soil flat. Then he waited.
Every morning he stared at the dirt. It stayed silent and brown.
'Nothing is happening,' Sam whispered. He stomped his foot once. Hard.
Sam leaned close until his nose almost touched the soil. Then he heard it — a tiny scratch-scratch sound.
He froze so still a butterfly landed on his knee.
A green shoot broke through the dirt! Sam gasped and pointed.
It grew taller through the next day — a stem, two leaves, and a tight green bud that wiggled in the breeze.
Sam hummed a wiggly song and did a happy dance around it.
The bud opened with a soft rustle — bright yellow petals unfurled into a giant sunflower taller than Sam.
He gently rested his cheek against the warm, rough stem.
'You took your time,' he said. The sunflower leaned toward him in the breeze.
