Sam dumped his box of toy cars onto the green field. But instead of stopping, they rolled straight past the swings and into the sandbox. He scuffed his shoe against the gravel path and listened. The metal wheels clattered away, unanswered.
He scuffed his shoe against the gravel path and turned toward the old oak tree at the edge of the field. It stood tall and gnarled, its branches wide and heavy with green leaves. Sam's toy cars clattered quietly in the sandbox behind him.
Sam kicked a pebble and watched it skitter toward a tangle of ivy at the oak's base. A breeze moved through the leaves, carrying the scent of damp earth and something sweet — something he couldn't quite name. The pebble vanished into the green shadows.
The pebble disappeared into the green shadows. Sam crouched low and pushed aside a curtain of hanging vines, peering into the darkness beyond. Something warm and sweet tugged at him — he thought he ought to look.
Sam stepped through the vines and into a sun-dappled clearing he had never seen before. He froze for a moment, then stepped closer. A riot of purple, yellow, and crimson flowers spilled across the soft green grass like a painted blanket.
Sunlight glinted off dewdrops clinging to a spiderweb between two flower stems. Sam reached out to touch a tall stalk of bluebells, and a single pale petal drifted down, landing softly on his open palm.
A giggle bubbled up from somewhere deep inside him. He pressed his cheek against the cool velvet leaf of a bluebell and breathed in. The petal in his palm felt impossibly soft, like a secret the flowers had kept just for him.
Sam sat cross-legged among the flowers and began to pick them — not to pull them from the ground, but to weave. Purple, yellow, and crimson petals fell into his lap one by one as he worked.
He lifted the petal crown onto his head and sat back to look at it. The colors matched the flowers around him perfectly — purple and yellow and crimson, all woven together. He thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
The distant shouts of other children playing on the swings faded further and further away. Sam hummed a quiet tune that matched the rustling leaves above him. The crown tilted to one side, but he didn't mind at all.
The leaves rustled above him, and the flowers nodded in the breeze. Sam closed his eyes and listened to the clearing breathe. He thought this was the best secret in the whole wide world.
Time passed slowly in the clearing. Sam stayed among the flowers, the petal crown on his head, breathing in the sweet air. The oak tree stood watch over him, and the ivy curtain hung quietly behind him. He was exactly where he wanted to be.
