dreams and perseverance

Santhino stood at the edge of the neighborhood court, arms reaching up toward the rusted hoop. His fingers brushed empty air as the orange ball bounced away, rolling toward the gutter. He scooped it up, wiped it on his shorts, and lined up his shot again.

From behind the chain-link fence, Santhino watched the older kids — their shoes squeaking loud on the painted court. He asked a tall girl if he could play. She shook her head and passed the ball to her friend instead.

He sat on the metal bench and bounced the ball against the concrete. Tap. Tap. Tap. Each rhythm sounded quieter, slower — like footsteps walking away down an empty street.

The next afternoon, Santhino carried a stack of folded newspapers to the court. He tucked them under the hoop rim, one layer at a time, until the basket sat lower — close enough for him to reach.

Swish. Clank. Swish. Santhino shot and shot and shot, his sneakers scuffing black arcs into the asphalt. At the edge of the court, a man in a windbreaker stopped and watched him for a long time.

"You missed fifty," the coach said, holding out a silver whistle. "But you didn't stop." Santhino stared at the whistle, then at the coach's expectant face.

He nodded so hard his cap tipped over his eyes. When he pulled it back up, the coach was already writing his name on a clipboard.

Weeks later, Santhino stood at center court inside a big stadium. The polished floor reflected the bright overhead lights like a mirror. His heartbeat drummed in his ears louder than the crowd.

He bounced the ball once. Twice. The crowd's roar rushed through his head like wind tearing through the chain-link fence back home.

He rose. Arms up. The ball left his fingertips and arced toward the rim — high, higher, hanging against the sea of bright lights.

The net snapped white. The crowd erupted. Santhino stood at center court, the ball rolling gently to a stop at his sneakers — the same black marks he'd scuffed into the asphalt months ago.

He picked up the ball, turned, and looked back toward the tunnel where the coach waited. Santhino smiled. Then he ran onto the court.
