Sara heard a soft buzzing on the sand. She followed the sound toward the dunes under the starry sky.
She found a brass compass glowing blue. The needle pointed toward the dunes. Sara tucked it in her pocket and kept walking.
The wind whispered as she walked. Near a stone, she saw a small lantern hanging from a rock.
She shook the lantern, and it flickered to life. A warm yellow circle spread across the sand.
Sara walked with the lantern, but the sand turned to slippery slopes. She slid down and landed on her bottom.
The compass needle spun wildly. Sara looked up and saw a fox with huge ears twitching between the dunes.
The fox approached, then stopped at a narrow crack. It whined and backed away from the dark opening.
Sara shone the lantern inside and saw a smaller fox stuck. She reached in and pulled it free.
The mother fox nuzzled Sara's arm. The little fox stayed close to its parent.
The two foxes trotted beside Sara. She patted the nearest fox's ear.
The compass glowed softly, then went dark. Sara patted the fox's ear one more time.
She continued walking under the watchful stars. The desert was quiet again.
