Sherlyn crawled across the carpet. Colorful balloons bobbed overhead. She spotted a pile of wrapped presents.
Her fingers brushed shiny bows and crinkly paper. SWISH. CRINKLE. She tugged at one box.
The paper tore open with a loud CRINKLE. Board books tumbled out! Sherlyn's eyes went wide.
One book had a big blue whale on the cover. She patted it gently. GIGGLE.
Sherlyn looked across the room. The birthday cake sat on the table with one tall glowing candle.
She reached toward the candle. The flame flickered wildly, then stood perfectly still. Waiting.
Her family gathered around the table. CLAP, CLAP, CLAP. Sherlyn took a deep breath.
She puckered her lips at the tiny flame. The room held its breath with her.
She blew hard. PFFFT. The candle went out with a soft POP of smoke.
Her family cheered! 'YAY!' Sherlyn clapped and beamed with a wide, toothy smile.
Sherlyn picked up her blue whale book. She held it up high for everyone to see.
The room shimmered with balloon strings and happy noise. Sherlyn bounced on her knees. She loved her whale book.
