At the family picnic, Sophia grabbed the bright kite. She raced down the green mountain valley.
The kite flipped backward and landed in the picnic basket. POP! Sophia pulled the string, but the knot tightened.
Sophia tried again beside the checkered blanket. She looped the string around a stick and a stone.
WHOOSH! The kite scooted across the grass and wrapped around a picnic chair. Sophia whispered, “I can do it.”
Sophia carried the kite to an open patch. She threw it high, and it rose for one second.
Then the kite dropped with a soft PLIP onto a plate. Green leaves covered the sandwiches.
Sophia watched the family nearby, but said nothing. A gust lifted the kite toward the mountain slope.
Sophia reached after it until the string caught on a bush. She gripped the spool and called, “Family, please help!”
The grass rustled as the family came over. Together, they gently freed the string from the bush.
They ran together. The kite sailed above the sunny valley, dancing like a giant colorful bird.
