The pavement cracked with a groan. A shadowy villain rose from the rubble, its smoky arms wrapped tight around a city bus. Spide swung down and shot a web line, yanking the bus free. The villain laughed and pulled it back. Its hollow eyes locked on him. Not today, Spide thought. He let go and swung toward the tall buildings behind it.
Spide dove from a fire escape and landed between the villain and a group of pedestrians. He shot webs to pin the creature's arms to the ground. But the villain wriggled free like smoke through a crack. A baker ran out of his shop with a flour-dusted tray, holding it like a shield. It's after the power grid, Spide realized, seeing smoky fingers twitch toward the glowing tower.
A street sweeper and a bike messenger joined Spide, forming a line across the avenue. Now! Spide shouted, and they threw everything — brushes, chain, webbing — all tangling into one thick net. The villain roared and burst through, sending tools flying. But Spide saw something glinting inside the smoke: a small, trembling heart of light.
Spide dropped his fighting stance and walked straight toward the villain, hands open. The creature paused, confused by a hero who wasn't attacking. What do you want? Spide asked. The shadowy form shivered, and deep inside the darkness, a child's face appeared — lost, scared, and alone.
The baker, the street sweeper, and the messenger stepped forward together. Spide took the child's smoky hand and pulled it gently toward the glowing tower. The shadow clung to the child's small fingers but didn't resist.
Spide stood on the sidewalk with the baker, the street sweeper, the messenger, and the now-glowing child. They watched the city lights flicker back on — one block at a time. The child's light grew warmer, painting the street in soft gold.
Spide grinned. He hadn't fought the darkness — he'd led it home. The child's glow warmed the whole block, and the city breathed easier around them.
Same time tomorrow? the messenger asked. Spide gave a thumbs-up. The four of them walked off together down the golden street, the glowing child between them, the city lit up all around.
