A beach pillow zoomed across the sand. It bumped right into the girl! Stitch froze on top of it. One foot kept bouncing. The seagull cried overhead.
Stitch picked up a smooth blue shell. He held it out. The girl tilted her head. She pointed to her chest. "Mira," she said softly.
Stitch tried saying her name. It came out squeaky. The girl giggled. She took his hand. They walked toward a picnic bench under a palm tree.
Stitch sat beside her. He pointed and asked, "What is your name?" She smiled. "Mira." He repeated it. The stars sparkled brighter.
A shooting star streaked across the sky. The girl gasped. Stitch looked up. His ears wiggled. "Mira," he whispered again.
Together they watched the stars. They danced above the dark water. The ocean whispered against the shore.
Stitch rested his head on her shoulder. She hummed a tune. His ears twitched. He hummed back in a different key.
They stayed like that. The stars kept dancing. The ocean kept whispering. Nothing else mattered.
The park lights flickered on. The girl stood up. Stitch stood too. His foot bounced once.
"Good night, Stitch," she said. He waved. "Mira," he squeaked. She smiled and waved back.
Stitch watched her walk away. He picked up the smooth blue shell. It was a good night.
He placed the shell on the picnic bench. Then he sat down, looked up, and listened to the stars.
